It is always the same. [Rant about "necroing"]
I don´t get it. Why the hell is posting on an old thread seen as a capital offense?

Always the same pattern, an old thread geans some more replies, one rules layer comes in crying necroing and boom, admin posts a canned response and the thread is closed.

It is always one guy crying (and probably grassing to admin).
Forum "culture" is weird, you could say almost toxic.

you're right, it's an offense invented by chronically online users that feel the need to police the forums themselves.

there's actually no such thing as necro in a forum.
and no mention of it in the rules
https://psteamhelp.yuanyoumao.com/en/faqs/view/6862-8119-C23E-EA7B

if someone replies to a thread that's still relevant, with a valid response, no matter how old the thread was, that's not necro.

if someone replies to a thread simply to bring it to the front page without adding to the convo, that's a bump, which is against the rules, but it's not necro.

if someone replies to a thread with nonsense, for no reason, that's spam, which is against the rules, but it's not necro.

but also note, the front page of the forums says: "Searching is key! Before you post a question, use the forum search feature to determine whether your topic has already been covered."

which implies users are encouraged to post in existing threads.
but as you've experienced, that leads to cries of "necro".
however, and I speak from experience, if a user started a new thread about a topic already covered, those same users would cry "use the search".
and, of course, once a thread is closed, there's the rule against: "Re-posting closed, modified or deleted content"

so, combined, the effective rule is "topics may only be discussed once ever".

yeh, these forums are a terrible place.
sadly, valve don't care.

if they did care, they'd add something to alert a user they're adding to an old thread so ensure it's relevant.
or, they'd make it clearer that a new reply in a thread was a long time after the previous reply, instead of hoping the next user to see it checked the timestamps themselves.

good luck out there.

You wouldn’t want old threads crowding out new ones, especially when older ones possibly contain outdated information.

Link your new thread to the old one, problem solved.
Hi Im Swat 11 月 20 日 上午 10:18
Easy, because old threads are often outdated and therefore the information contain is irrelevant. It's easier and faster to create your own topic than bumping one from the grave and hijacking it.
bschu 11 月 20 日 上午 10:33
I didn't even know "necroing" is a name for that, LOL XD

But I agree with you. If the thread is still active, and you can post on it, then you did nothing wrong. Many people online might see these posts years later.

If they don't want you to "necro" then they should lock old posts. It's not the fault of the poster, just bad management.
Hikari Light 11 月 20 日 上午 10:35
Several threads that started years ago have been actively posted on are allowed as the thread is active.

If it has been months or years since the last post, just make a new thread and provide a link to the old one.

Old threads most of the time have outdated info that can lead to misinformation being spread because that old info may not work.

Only if one didn't actually read. Being told to search before posting doesn't mean you then post in an old thread. It just means you should search to see if your question is already answered before posting. It doesn't then tell you to go bump old threads if its not answered.

Hopefully this help clears up your confusion. Please let us know if there are any other rules you aren't familiar with on steam and we can assist you with those as well.

I apologize if that is how you read it, being unknowledgable on a subject doesn't make one a child. No one is an expert on everything afterall.

Likewise its not a "capital offense" to lock a thread. Now if they issued you a ban for it then it would be another issue. Hopefully you've realized that the proper way to handle this as others have mentioned is to not bump old threads, but instead create a new thread and you can even link back to the old thread

So only lock ones that have outdated information...but the mods lock old threads that are still 100% accurate and nothing has changed since the thread was last discussed. There are far too many topics on the exact same issue already, increasing the number of duplicated threads on the same topic by moderator action is dumb.
RPG Gamer Man 11 月 20 日 下午 2:22
Problem is scammers have been posting on steam lately. I think they are locking the old forum threads to prevent scammers for forum posting about some random scammer posting about a scam site. Scammers ruin it for everyone. I see at least 3-5 ones a day posting on older posts too. So these scammer bots are to blame for them locking old forum threads.

Didn't realize anyone had been put to death or received life imprisonment for necroing a thread.

Or maybe someone is being WAY too sensitive about a thread being locked for being irrelevant

If people stopped acting like children there would be a lot less reason to treat them like ones!

Moderators aren't going to spend hours researching threads to determine if they have old info or not.

Not to mention how would a random moderator know if the information for fixing a bug in Game X is outdated or not? They would have no way to know

Maybe you'd garner a more sympathetic response from people if you didn't try so hard to be a victim in the face of someone talking to you in a normal manner.

Personally your posts scream to me like you have absolutely no knowledge of nettiquette whatsoever and it is thus very easy to completely disregard your opinion on what is basically an universally agreed rule on every single forum in existence.

People creating duplicate topics isn’t a thread locking issue, rather a people failing to search for the answer to their topic before creating a new one.
