Let Valve deal with them, you're probably not the only user targeted. As for being banned, it's all false, they are trying to frighten you using scare mongering tactics, they can do nothing with your account unless you provide them the details, give them no information at all and follow the above advice given by DarkCrystalMethod.

They should really put a link to the list of common scams next to the link to the forum rules that's on every page. It comes up constantly.

I like the idea, unfortunately, it will only be read after the fact. If Valve put a warning up on every forum page in bright neon lights, it would probably be ignored.

I'd like to see a warning whenever a user comes online, take PC security seriously!! Sadly, the average user does not and will quite happily give away their details without any thought whatsoever.

Everyone on the planet could report you. As long as you haven't done something against the rules nothing will amount to it.

Well, quite a few times the report message might be blank or gibberish and the tech sees that there's a report and blindly reaches for the hammer. When you ask they automatically say it was applied correctly as if I was asking did the ban button work when you clicked it, not that someone actually read the report, the actual message that was being reported and then said that there is certainly something bad here.
People use the report button when they disagree, rather than if it broke rules. It might not even be people... as bots can report too.

When people falsely report you it'll become their problem, not yours. And if you suddenly receive a massive flood of false reports then Steam support will eventually just ignore the whole lot and mark it as harassment.

Not to mention... just reporting someone doesn't mean that Steam staff is also going to take action against them "no questions asked", the idea itself is just ridiculous.

while it is true that some workers may just mash whatever button ok's a report

that is a different problem altogether

that is underpaid people jammed into a too small office with a quota they meet or get fired

or beaten if we are to believe some of the vids that were put out there
