IMHO that's how game forums should be during release. It allows the actual customers to discuss the game and contains all the noise away. At least until trolls find another thing to be fake-angry about.
The only issue is a supposed link to SBI.
That idea is something I pushed a while back myself (got quite a few people angrily disagreeing).
An issue I can see is if you are intending to buy the game, but the game hasn’t come out, and the game doesn’t have preorders, then you lose the word of mouth advertising/hype that a lot of smaller games benefit from with people talking about the game on its forums here.
And if you have preorders enabled you’re going to get a lot of people abusing the refund to troll.
Same might be a problem for owners only; trolls buy the game, spam until they get banned, and then refund.
At my current level of thought on the matter you’d have to be able to purchase a nonrefundable chit that grants you early access to the forum and is exchangeable for an equivalent amount off the purchase of the game or something.
For the other issue of general refund trolling however it might just be “you can’t use the game owner forum until you’ve played 2 hours”.
In a fortnight or a month trolls and toxic users have usually found another trendy thing someone said them to be angry about (Sure there's some exceptions where toxicity lingers for longer).
Steam requires to leave at least a section open to everyone if you lock your forums to owners-only. That way people who don't own the game can still ask questions and the toxicity is all encapsulated in that space while the general forums operate as normal for game owners.
I'm actually curious. Is there a link where I can see what was exactly said?
Not unless all context were stripped away from it because that context would annihilate their talking points.
