One way to improve is to learn how to use the game's cover system, if it has one. Otherwise duck behind obstacles that the enemy can't shoot through.
Enemy characters might let the other enemies know where you are, so switch to stealth unless you know you can win without taking damage, etc.
Always and perhaps automatically hit your weapon reload between shots so you have maximum ammo when you do decide to shoot. But aiming also helps.

A lot will depend on the type of games you play. I mostly play FPS so some tips for those type of games, find a weapon you enjoy using, then practice, learn how to use it at all ranges, as posted above, always make sure your magazine is fully loaded before any fire fight. Have a backup weapon ready to go, a sidearm is perfect, but you need to know how to use it if you're out of ammunition or reloading your main weapon.

Watch other players that have a lot of time in the game, they will have their own specific play style, adapt what you learn from them to suit your own play style, are you a defensive player? Are you an attacking player? Find a play style that suits you.

Learn the maps, some players will know every area on a map and how to use it to their advantage, learn alternative routes if an area is blocked or currently being covered by a sniper.

Have healing items on a quick access key, if you're injured, the last thing you want is to be looking for a first-aid kit if you're under fire and taking damage.

Use cover, a tree, a vehicle, bushes, even a dark area on a map can give you a slight advantage.

Learning anything new takes time, don't be so hard on yourself if you fail or die quickly, try and learn from any mistake, that's the most important thing on improving.

Thinking that you need to stick to some certain genre like first person shooters or soulslikes to be "real gamer" is probably first mistake most people do.
There is plethora of gaming genres, many of them not even requiring to be proficient with gamepad or controls.
Check around what you might like instead of trying to restrict yourself to some "popular" gaming genre. Plenty of people, some even very old and not proficient with reaction time and controls have found their niche of games that they can be happy with.

when i say this is it's not required to use as advice. Always do it yourself.

take five different studies and learn them all at the same time in the same session.

or

stop and focus on one motivation and maybe get to know the people there. that means go to their forums and groups. you might just find out where the hosts are is not where the party is.
