Grey market seller after the fact, what should I do?
I have recently bought a quite large dlc package for Train sim world 6(special edition), as I do: bought it with instantgaming and I don't know why, but it came to me: how Do they get these keys so cheap. I always convinced myself that instantgaming gets these keys either from shops that have a surplus or they buy them at sale prices from steam or other stores, beacuse the prices of the games there correlate with sale prices, but turns out, they likely buy from countries that have lower prices. I am not here to get told to not do this anymore, I learned my lesson and i won't buy from instantgaming ever again(my moral compass tells me so), but the real quiestion(s) behind this is:

1. What should i do with the bought keys(I already activated them, some keys are older than at least 1,5 years and all are from very old games like the original cities skylines), should I delete them and buy new ones from steam or should i keep them?

2. And can these keys get me in trouble?

Also sorry for my horrendous spelling,

Relax you're blameless, and cannot be charged, and as for grey markets. They abuse loopholes. They rarely deal in stolen goods, because stealing is less profitable, and is more time consuming. You also need not feel sorry for the publishers. They made this mess, and continue to make it.

They could just choose to sell through reputable storefronts, and not dole out keys like they are candy to every streamer, but that's never going to happen with these geniuses. They'll gladly pay a quarter to chase after a nickle.

Rest assured you probably overpaid for those games, because I've seen them in Humble bundles myself, and they were going for well under a dollar a piece. There's a good chance that's where the keys you used came from.

Publishers pump their keys into those dark alleys. The real problem with using those dark alleys. Is that the people who run those sites. Probably aren't being as cautious as they should be. Even reputable companies that should know better skimp on security.

1. You already activated them, so they're bound to your account already. You can't delete them, the permanently remove is just an advanced hide.
2. trouble? No. Is it possible some could be revoked at one point due to them being part of a batch obtained via creditcard fraud or such? Sure.

1) They’re activated, most you can do is “remove them from your account,” but even that is an “advanced hiding” feature (They won’t show up in your library anymore unless you’ve 100%-ed them-then they’ll only show in your completed games list) you can go to the support page and get them added back to your library at any time.

2) No. They might be revoked/removed from your account at some point if the publisher deactivates them because they were stolen/etc. But that’s the worst that will happen.

I encourage you to use IsThereAnyDeal in the future, they only list key sellers that are legitimate. My preference is Fanatical, but I’ve also bought from Humble once because they had a game I really wanted. I’ve bought a ton of keys from Fanatical in the past year or so (when I discovered them) and never had an issue-their support is better than Steam’s, IMO.

I’m really sick of so many gaming YouTubers taking sponsorships from Instant Gaming when all it took for me was roughly an hour or two of research to clock that they weren’t 100% “above board,” so to speak.

In 99% of all cases nothing will happen. At all.
While i personally dont buy from greyzone resellers anymore and have not done so in some years, i easily bought a 1000+ keys from such sites over the years i am on Steam and only 2! ever got revoked because there was some payment shenanigans going on in the background.
And those 2 were like 50 cent games so i really did not even care.
I switched to buying from authorized reseller stores a few years ago, simply because i want the money to actually go the the people who made/publish those games. And i stopped having this need to buy large amounts of cheap games all the time.

But realistically nothing will happen with the keys you activated, they will just work fine like any other game and you will never have them revoked or anything.

Not true. Sometimes they sell stolen review keys for games. This was confirmed when they tried it for the BROK THE INVESTIGATOR game when people sold the demo keys as full games keys. The developer hid the fact these keys were demos of the game, and not full game, so when the sellers who stole it got mad about it, they review bombed the game. THE sentinals of the stores caught this, so yea, some of those keys are stolen and not legitimate. Stop spreading lies around.

There are many web sites still with this news on, so you can google it yourself too. Note due to this many curator groups were actually banned because they were review bombing the game because they belonged to the accounts of people who were selling stolen review keys of the game. The developer was actually afraid the keys would be stolen, and yes, they were. So that is why they made it only a demo of the review version without telling anyone..lol.
