It's a gaming platform that allows you to purchase, download, then play a wide variety of games from different genres. FPS, Co-Op, RTS, etc.
You also have specific gaming hubs where you can find out information about that game, or ask for help if you need it, report a bug, etc.
You can send friend invites to people that you have played alongside during a game, a great way to put together a team for a MP or Co-Op game.
Steam also has sales and events regularly, so if you're looking for a specific type of game it could be part of a sale at a reduced price, some games are even free to play (F2P).
I've been using Steam for many years and it's a great platform to use.
