Xbox controller issue on mac
Hi everyone !
I have some issues with my Xbox controller. I think i have tried literally everything i had in mind to make it work.

- Activate/Desactivate Steam input,
- Update my computer,
- Uninstall and re install Steam,
- Uninstall and re install every games i wanted to play.

But nothing seems to work. The controller is well recognized as such by my macbook and by Steam, when i perform some calibrating test in my big picture mode, every button is well recognized too. Also, i tried to connect my mac to a second screen, but when i opened my game settings, the option to select the screen displaying the game didn't recognize any other screen. If any of you know anything, please let me know ! :)

Been having the same problem since they made the PS / Xbox controllers able to natively connect to the OS. I think it's a steam input problem and how it handles the controllers in game. I have a LOT of games tha work on the Mac but the darn controller doesn't work on 2/3 of them so I have to play most of my games on my alienware (Shudder)..... If anyone has any more input on thsi please post ;)

Apple Silicon macs only work with a handful of controllers, and I don't think Xbox controllers are compatible, except maybe for the current generation. There's a list of compatible gamepads on Apple's support pages.

Supported Xbox game controllers:

Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708)
Xbox Wireless Controller Series S
Xbox Wireless Controller Series X
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

I just want to add this here... this was a solution to a problem in Hollow Knight where the controller input would cut in & out intermittently. I'm not saying this is the solution to every controller issue on Mac, but it did help at least get one of my games up and running.

This also has worked for some people on some games sometimes.

Enable access for both Steam and the individual games In…

MacOS System Settings -> Privacy & Security ->
Bluetooth
Accessibility
Input Monitoring

Some games aren't able to be individually added for some reason. The file for the game isn't anywhere to be found in the directory, despite being able to locate it through Steam > game > Manage > Properties > Installed Files > Browse. And I'm not sure it matters anyway as the games that I could add individually didn't work for me, but some people say it worked for them.

Some games work with Steam Input enabled and some work with Steam Input disabled. But nothing is working at all for most games and this has been a problem for years now.

I've been using Crossover and have no controller issues at all so I think it has something to do with the Mac version of Steam. Using Crossover isn't ideal especially for games that can run natively on my Mac, but I guess it's good enough for now. It's also running some Windows only games pretty well actually so if anyone is interest in Crossover, head over to Codeweavers.com.

Crossover allows you to run Windows programs on MacOS, including the Windows version of Steam and games. This has been the only thing that's actually getting my games up and running on my Mac.

FWIW I have an Xbox 360 controller, Steam Controller and DualSense 5 controller and only the latter works with my M-series Mac.

I just tried my Xbox controller and it's working on 90% of the games I have that are both PC/Mac on Steam. I was shocked because for a while it didn't work on one of them Streets of Rage 4. But now all is working 100% don't know if Apple did an update to controller handling. (M3 Pro Max)

Hello, guys, I’m using an open source controller mapper, “Enjoyable” app for Mac. Instantly recognized my controller and no configuration was needed. I’m playing Bastion and it works great. I got so happy when it did it. Note that I’m using a xone controller wired via usb, so it’d be nice to know how it does with other controllers, wireless and also with Apple silicon, I hope it helps.

I also have the same issue. The DualSense works fine, but the Xbox Elite Series 2 stops working after launching certain games. I’ve tried it with and without input configurations, but nothing helps. Has anyone resolved this issue?
