I am having the same issues where steam is telling me ""Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.' I have looked through numerous forums and 'solutions' none of which have worked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, I have tried the above solution of creating a config.vdf folder and relaunching - doesn't work. I have tried going to file/application support/Steam....etc and that fix didn't work. I tried the launching and the clicking and holding on the pop up box for 10 seconds, didn't work (I don't get a pop up box). I have tried a number of other fixes too none of which work. However the most concerning thing about all of this is that I see posts from over 10 years ago with people having the same issue, hundreds or even thousands of people and steam have clearly failed to address this. Exactly why I CANT spend any money on games with Steam because 1, cant get into steam, and 2... no-one wants to spend money on games which at some point they may not be able t access anymore and seemingly now that Steam have your money they don't care.

I am on mac OSX btw.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get Steam to connect to the internet that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I had the same issue with it saying I had to be online (which I was). I went into the IP settings on the mac and changed my default dns server ( as it was pointing to my ISP dns servers - Virgin Media). I changed it to Google's public dns address which is 8.8.8.8 and then steam worked straight away. Maybe give that a go and see if it helps!

.. following this (I am on Virgin Media as it happens) . I have a SMARTY sim in a portable hub we use in motor home; so turned it on , connected to that and the STEAM update ran with no problem ..!

I've tried many things that people have suggested but this was the only one that worked! If you do this just remember to hit "Apply" before you open steam again. I know it's obvious but I forgot to hit it for some reason.

was able to find a solution but i was not the one that discovered it

I was not able to install the app at all on my macbook until i did the following

ping media.steampowered.com

which should give you an ip

in your hosts file

/etc/hosts

make a new line with

[the ip you got from the ping above with out the square brackets ] client-download.steampowered.com

save the file and try installing again

I'm on a 2020 MacBook Air M1.

I updated my DNS entries and pointed to Google's DNS (8.8.8.8).

This worked great!
