I also remember having problems getting a l4d2 versus server up and running. But that was years ago and I don't remember all the details.
When your server is up and running and you try to load a versus map via console command....does it work then?
Trying to load a versus map directly via the startup command line didn't work for me either.
A workaround to get a versus map as a starting map is to create a custom config file (e.g. versus_start.cfg).
In that you simply put the map command for loading a map in versus mode:
map c1m2_streets versus
My startup commandline:
./srcds_run -console -game left4dead2 +map c1m1_hotel +exec versus_start.cfg
This way the server will start in versus mode running the map specified in versus_start.cfg.
In the server.cfg - which will get executed by default - I've only set a custom hostname.
No maxplyers, gamemodes, etc. setting is being used here.
