Anyway, my best guess is that since Half-Life 2 was the first game to use the Source engine(aside from Counterstrike: Source), Valve may be working on a new engine, which they'll debut with the next official installment of Half-Life *crosses fingers*. Either that, or they're just waiting for us to stop caring. Not sure that's gonna happen, though..
Edit: Syro's theory is also very plausible.

Either that, or the ending to Episode 2 is one where you choose your own ending, instead of there being a defined ending. I could be wrong with this one, though, and I do hope I'm wrong.
