They think belief in God is what causes the issues around them. Therefore they reify God and see him as the source of unwanted behavior, and attack it in the way you would a bad parent, a king, etc. They think if I can take down God, he will lose influence with his followers. And if his followers stop listening to him, they will become more like me, and since I am doing what I'm supposed to, they will too, and everything will be good.

Ceremonial laws (animal sacrifices, temple rituals, etc) we're fulfilled and rendered obsolete, but moral laws (the ten commandments and the core ethic principles) still stand.
