Is soviet style housing policies the only way to solve the housing crisis?
Like if government own all the houses and only rent them out based on needs at artifical low rates without any ability for individuals or corperations to own houses or rent them out in second hand, which would remove housing being used an asset rather than as an home.

And instead of focus on single family home, the focused would changed to large appartment buildings to maximize the amount of inhabitant space.

Putin will make that all come true. Just trust in Putin, he will deliver in his promise to bring back the Soviet Union and make Russia great again.

The projects in the US was a form of government controlled housing, it didn't turn out to well. IF you don't own you home, there is little incentive to maintain it. HUD housing is similar, looks decent when it is first built, but within 10 years it looks like poop, they don't own it, so they do not care if it is trashed.
Of the many great things about the Soviet Union, this was one of them. The Soviet housing program was very efficent, and put the needs of the people first instead of exploitative profit-seeking corporations or petit bourgeois landlords. The Soviet Union had a much lower degree of homelessness than virtually any capitalist nation, as housing was considered a human right rather than a commodity.

Yet back then housing and rent was actually far more affordable compared to now.

If you enjoy low wages and living in a room no larger than your bed, that is. Nobody will call any of the hundreds of other things with it great.

Yet wages in USA in the past was similar if not higher in real terms in the past compared to today and that despite huge gdp growth.

I did not even talk about Soviet Union here, just USA and last 50 years or so it seems like economic conditions for regular americans have gotten worse if not much worse and that somehow despite all economic growth.

And what OP is describing is USSR-style housing.
