Hardware support is pretty limited, and worse yet most of that hardware is pretty underpowered. The PinePhone and even Librem 5 as quite slow. The PinePhone Pro is basically the bare minimum for a device usable as a daily driver, and something like a OnePlus 6 is optimal.
Considering how good GNU/Linux on smartphones has gotten, I will soon be ditching Android.
LineageOS and /e/OS work brilliantly. Go support Murena and encourage them to release more models internationally.

As mentioned above, the best option is buying an Android phone that can install Linux instead.
PostMarketOS is actually quite decent.
TBH though, UbuntuTouch is the only one I ever see anything about.
I will be buying a OnePlus 6 or 6T soon, which will be a slight upgrade in hardware specs from my current main smartphone (Google Pixel 2 XL - Currently on LineageOS 22.2) and because the Google Pixel 2 XL is plenty fast for me, the OnePlus 6/6T should be even more so. It's support is among the best and is also among one of the most powerful smartphones that can run the mainline Linux kernel.
It's not 100% there yet though, for the OnePlus 6 there's still somewhat lacking camera support (although progress has been made on that front) and USB OTG. Apart from that, mostly everything works.
I think GNU/Linux on smartphones could someday be a third option for more people once hardware support improves, and for some people (like me) it's already is just as good if not better than Android.
I imagine SteamOS on a phone would be ass. The mobile Steam app has had problems for years. This is not an area that Valve excel in.
Really just WHY?! Besides having yet another app to suck on more data
So i wouldnt think they could make a good steam os phone based on that
