Why aren't games trying to be funny anymore?
One thing i noticed about games today, is that they just lost the pursuit of being funny.. Characters that are goofy, off the wall, and especially dark humor. I mean i look at games like TF2 which is full of Charm, and humor and still played today because of the characters personalities, which are all goofy and off the wall. Its fun. Or games like Saints Row 3 which was GTA on crack, but now look at new Saints Row and its all gone.. to blandness. Shadow Warrior which was all about humor (the MC name is Wang.. i mean come on lol) but Shadow Warrior 3 plays it SO safe, and just tries hard to be funny while walking on eggshells.

Is it just the time we are in with companies wanting to not offend, or is it just the lack of quality writers with little to no comedic talent?

A sense of humor is a rare trait as of late...

I dunno but revisiting Borderlands 1 and 2 wacky humor from their time is... an experience. Maybe companies want to avoid this. They have DUBSTEP for God's sake.

Not wrong..

Supraworld and Megabonk both have lots of humor.

Not a lot in AAA that I've seen in the past few years. The Savage Planet games are full of humor... sort of. Wackiness, anyway, and sarcasm about corporations. Safe humor.

I think you're on the right track, though, Clumsybeast. Most humor was cancelled by scolds over the past 15 years or so. It's slowly making a comeback, though, and the scolds are losing their power.

I was more talking about AAA, but yeah im sure there are some indie games that do humor well.

humour is good, but i sometimes am absolutely joyed when a game does not try to be funny. not everything needs humour, silliness, quips.

sometimes its nice to just be taking a story seriously, not have the characters cracking jokes in the middle of extremely intense situations.

i blame joss whedon for overuse of cracking wise in media

I mean the same can be said that not every game has to be serious, dark, and completely void of humor either. lol Theres an over abundance of serious games now tbh, i would like to see games try to be funny, and have more personality tbh.

"Well. That happened."
We see less humor because audiences demand autheticity and, to some extent, seriousness. The Borderlands, Portal, Saint's Row style of rapid-fire irony feels woefully dated now. Even silly skins multiplayer shooters have received backlash.

I think it's been a positive shift overall. Maybe in a few years we'll decide that we've overcorrected, and reinject humor into pop media.

My thoughts exactly.

They fly now? They fly now.

Both + new gens of players have garbage standards + games companies are directed by corpo suits, not gamers.

aye, its just not really my thing tbh. humour in very dark, intense moments like a gunfight is rather out of place. if its woven into the story well like disco elysium, or is more dark humour like fallout, then thats great and i enjoy such things.

i even love joss whedons shows, though i blame him for the current situation of too much humour in some forms of media, especially films.

i prefer seriousness over silliness when it comes to storytelling, but both is fine.
