In today's political climate, the left of yesterday are now considered centre and being pushed further right every passing year due to the more extreme views of the left. Even lefties are turning on each other due to some extreme view.
One example of this that I viewed once was from this young woman who was talking about how she was scorned by her friends because she didn't want men to enter public restrooms. She was already far left but because she didn't agree with men in women's bathroom, her friends basically fire her off.
