PC hacked?
Just started up the PC as usual but significant changes have been made on it, it´s only me that have 100% physical access to it so there´s no way a change could have been made through that.

Document folder everything gone in it, web browser all favorites gone and passwords, setting preferences, addons.
The system seems to have been reset in several areas like background pic for desktop none, Windows typical environment settings, shortcuts on desktop most gone, have reverted to some saved file settings from before with some from a long time ago there but my ordinary ones all removed.

What could have caused this? Just logging in here required a security check with my phone and a sent password for it to login.

I use Malwarebytes as AV and i scan the computer almost daily and it´s up to date.

OS used: Windows 10 home edition.

sounds like your user account settings got corrupt or you're signing into a new account
check the user accounts list and see if you have a dupe or something weird

check c:\users\ for other account names.

Can you sign into one and check C:\users\usualaccountname\documents?

should not be empty

But corrupted just like that? I did nothing out of the ordinary before powering it down, just some usual web surfing, opened up Steam, a little gaming.
I wonder how if so.

Malware is everywhere in 2025.

Fwiw, theyre often hijacking drivers these days, and then embedding in firmware. Antiviruses are unlikely to detect this.

Can download sysinternals suite (from microsoft) and fire up autoruns. Look for anything colored red and labelled "unverified".

Well, typical me i think in terms of that it´s Microsoft. Always nagging about doing this and that and i´m firm in that it´s my PC and not theirs, it will never be theirs to do spyware activities on so what came up at the latest corrupt startup was that in particular; Microsoft asking of me to login and out from my Windows profile account but i have not done such a thing just yet, Refuse/Resist.

Edit: Checking the status of that now i´m logged out from it and it reads in a popup like so:
"You need a new app to open this ms-cxh link".

They ended support for Windows 10 recently. If you're unable to restore your data, it might be time to switch to windows 11 or a free linux OS. Valve should be releasing its own free Linux OS in early 2026. Try recovery options. You may be able to reset the computer to an earlier date.

you can still get the extended security service for windows 10 that will be provided untill 14 october 2026.
They decided to do that like 1 or 2 days after I went over to windows 11 xd
But don't worry about it, you only a lvl 7 Druid and what do they know compared to any shaman? :P

I got confirmation from them that a temporary update service had been established until the absolute transition to Win11 is finally due.

But i see that as no reason for this? Why would it be if i´m not right about the suspicion that
they´re tampering remotely with a persons PC in order to press them into making a switch to
Win 11.

Now this is just a lingering thought at the back of my head, i´m not totally excluding it as being impossible. Weird times we live in overall.

The shaman-druid distinction is just a means of dividing and conquering, typically employed by Germanic hordes and Roman popery. Getting hacked for the first time can be extremely rewarding. It is a free educational boot camp. If you're unable to recover the data, it is a lesson in letting go. Starting with a clean PC and a fresh OS install is refreshing. It sucks to all hell, but it will make you a better user in the long run. I wouldn't use extended support. Also, never get the extended warranty. These are always scams.

I don´t think so. It´s not a far fetched thought that somebody acts on it since i remotely already am hooked up to them so it´s just a matter of doing it or not doing it for them.

After Win XP Microsofts OS´es more and more developed into "Our PC, not yours buddy".
