I think Oda's just one of those super creative individuals who loves history and wanted to make something heartful. Kind of story America doesn't really make anymore (pollyanna etc..)
yes, "one pace" is the most famous one. it still has a lot of issues honestly, because the anime in general is filled with pointless fluff and fan service for padding.
i still recommend reading the manga over watching one pace, but one pace is better than watching vanilla one piece.
theres also a remake of the anime coming out which will significantly cut down on filler and padding.
