I understand why Trump doesn't really like NATO
The US is geographically protected, they have absolutely no threats (from land invasion) to worry about. They're a nuclear power, they have a stupidly powerful military with global presence, they can defend themselves from any threat, of which only Russia and China even pose a small threat because they're nuclear.

So you're Trump and you're thinking "why are we contributing to this "alliance" when they provide absolutely nothing we need?

https://i.gyazo.com/81ddaee114410abf21bdcbf8d630e16d.png spot the odd one out.

For the European Union, NATO makes complete sense and they absolutely should unite and pool their military resources to deter threats on their continent.

But from the US point of view, they risk getting dragged into conflicts that are on an entirely different continent, to defend significantly weaker countries, that don't really add much to the US military might.

There is a key argument for the US staying in NATO though, and that is that it gives them a lot of influence in the European continent, they can enact their own agendas and the EU is a very important economic "customer" of US technology.

And yet it was the USA that used article 5 for NATO and dragged the rest of NATO into a pointless war with Iraq and Afghanistan.

That was a totally different president lol. I'm not talking about the US as a country, I'm talking about the current presidents point of view.

That is how he likely sees it.

A republican president too.
I wonder if we (the USA) ever though of joining some North Africa Trade Agreement. They seem like much nicer people.

OP is saying what I have been saying for a while. We gain nothing in NATO. They are a liability at best

The US needs to leave NATO, and allow others to sign an agreement to be under our umbrella of protection for a subscription paid to us. With a signed terms of service that we decide.
Trump doesn`t like NATO because he is dictator worshipper and wants to be little rocket man with bigger rockets and invade his neighbors like Canada, Greenland and Venezuela for profit and personal gain.

agreed OP.

america > nato

have a nice day
We should probably bow out of the UN while we're at it.
Maybe force them to deal with Russia on their own terms.
Perhaps trying to end it with the least amount of bloodshed. That would be pretty great.

Which proves the point. Its an alliance that never shows up.
They were attacked and hundreds of thousands were killed in the countries largest city. That is not dragging people into a pointless war, it is defending itself.

I seem to remember some "Coalition of The Willing"(a whole bunch of nations) joining that war on terror(specifically in Iraq and Afghanistan,... before they changed their minds).
Or was that just CNN's fake news?

No one wants to follow the USA into pointless bloodshed again  maybe try fighting your own wars alone.

They all provide around 1% of their quota. Give me a break.

Other European countries were at war with them long before. Also I dont know why talking snarky to me, I didnt command any armies. Other countries made their own choices.
