Hello!
He was renowned for his charity and as a patron protector of childrne. He was known to sneak out at night to drop bags of gold down the chimneys or through the windows of the impoverished. Some of which might have ended up in laundry hung to dry by the fireplace. He was not accompanied by any magical elves, but a moorish slave boy named Pete whom he freed faithfully stayed with him to help.
According to Dutch tradition, he sailed across the Mediterranean to the low countries to bestow blessings, rather than flying with caribou. The man was from what is now Southern Turkey, so he probably had no idea what reindeer or caribou are, and was probably fairly dark skinned.
Incidentally, the alternate name "Kris Kringle" comes from the German "Kristkindle," because they believed that rather any any particular saint, it was literally the Baby Jesus flying around like a putto, bestowing gifts and blessings.
