What is the point to being a smug atheist?
Is it a radical celebration of immanence and the ultimate justification of giving in to your desires? A way to show that you're "civilized"? I don't get it. It's a belief system. There's no personal benefits to having it except for engaging in your desires.

OP is referring to the large number of posts being posted in OT by neckbeards trying to spread New Atheism. They keep posting these phony questions pretending to want to have discussions about religion and philosophy when all they're doing is propaganda dumping New Atheism. I think it's either one psycho with multiple burner accounts or maybe a group of them spamming OT. I do know that one of them uses a burner to attack posters when he gets cornered or ignored.

New Atheism is like Anarchism. It's this childish phase a lot of angry, rebellious or insecure kids go through when they start watching too much South Park, embrace edgelord comics like Bill Maher and Russell Brand or social media personalities like The Amazing Atheist. Luckily, because it is a phase, most people grow out of it and just respect everyone's beliefs regardless of whether they become religious or not. Others grow up to be angry, old potheads yelling at clouds like Bill Maher or insufferable smug aholes like Russell Brand.

It’s just something I don’t agree with and it’s something I’m not fully convinced of. Before you say anything I have read the Bible as well. I can’t take it as fact.

I'm not personally smug about it; it's just my outlook. You can subscribe to it or not as you choose.

But such smugness does exist. I imagine it is mostly a response to smug theists chortling into their hands over something that is, by its nature, impossible to test by empirical means (faith).

Live and let live, OP. What you believe in is your business. I’m not trying to convince you to abandon your faith. I’m just explaining why it’s not my thing and why I am not a believer myself. I made my point; you’re still free to believe.

I'll add a little more to this if you don't mind. The bible is written by man, not by God, all works have been written by human hands, never in the history of this planet has God given us anything directly written by it, he, she, they.

No one has ever seen God, people say they have when they "died" but I see Dinosaurs in my dreams, I fly in my dreams, your brain can do a lot and imagine a lot.

Religion is, in my opinion, good for some things, but human tend to take it to psychotic levels and it gets twisted. Very bad things have been done in the name of God and God has also wiped out most of life on this planet (supposedly in the bible). Doesn't sound benevolent to me.

I don't really care about atheist people. But on here the "smug atheist" type are popping back up which tries to pull the whole thing of trying to convince religious people of the non-existence of god... they're extremely self-confident and pretentious.

I think they just want to be a part of something, get negative and positive attention from different groups, it's probably the same mentality as "PC master race" people, and both things are most pervasive within teenagers and lonely middle aged people

it's about being top dog. it's about making a safer bet, siding with something less clumsy, newer and straight forward, and all the comforts that come with it. also has a lot to do with in-born inability of some people to live up with abstractions. or loss of ability to think abstractly. or other similar lacks that people don't choose. also has a lot to do with some people being intolerant to authorities. also has a lot to do with particular types of people who are trying to get their hands on religions to play out their... let's call them various drives. what in turn compromises belief systems a lot, and makes many people question and object.

consider this, and you'll see that smug atheist posts are inevitable like... idk... day night cycle.

but most importantly, consider internet trolling, and you'll realise why meses, mohammed and buddha went through what they went through and did what they did to seek help from beyond, above and inside.

I think it's one of those new groups that silly young people feel the need to join, or call out others on.
