Whatever you do don't feed them. Call your local Animal Control office so they don't breed and become out of control. Once they make sure they're healthy(no mites, etc) you can adopt them from shelters(because if you don't they'll euthanize them).

Don't pet overhead. Kneel down to their level, whisper quiet, lower your hand beneath their chin and let the cat sniff your fingertips or hand first before they either brush their face against your hand or let you go in for the head pats. Cats do not like being intimidated or having their upper whiskers disturbed by strangers and scenery alike.

They could see you as a threat, crouch, you're much smaller to them when you're crouched and won't appear as some huge approaching thing that wants to hurt them (no offence intended).

Some parts of town have roaming lynxes. They're wild animals that look like really big housecat. They WILL eat you if you can't scare them off.

Well, the first step is to be permitted.

Step 1 - let the kitty sniff you.

Adult strays take a very long time to really domesticate, because all they know is fighting for food, or fighting to not become food. They are wild animals, so you can't expect them to respond to domestic mannerisms.

Being wild animals, they also communicate more through body language. So something like staring at them for a while is actually perceived as a threat - because in the wild, the only reason you look at something for a long time is because you're hunting it. Instead you should only look at them for a moment, just long enough so they see you seeing them, and then look at something else soon after - because that tells them you're not interested in them as food,

Then let them approach you, and brush up against you first. Because when you reach out towards them, they think you're trying to grab them and will respond aggressively or run away. And you really don't want to get scratched by a stray cat, they carry a lot more diseases and parasites than domestic ones.

Should start with giving them food, then keep your distance and just be cool around them. Its a slower process getting wild animals to be comfortable around you.

Thats exactly how it works in real life.

Cats are used to make contact this way, so if you squat and offer your hand, the cat might consider taking a sniff. Just don't look directly in her eyes, cats might take that as a challenge.

And if the cat invites you to touch her, dont stroke her head or back, just gently rub her under the cheeks.

Don't be disappointed if the cat looses interest quckly, if she liked your smell and touch and you pass by another day, she might recognize you and engage on her own.
