I miss the Valkyrie Profile era.
Remember VP Lenneth ? Great game as most people would agree to say, good soundtrack, good graphism, good story, good gameplay, good crafting.

It was turn based but with timed combos (like shadow hearts), the story would be heavy most of the time ( a lot of video games nowadays tend to not be as dark) and the atmosphere was really great due to all of the above.

Maybe it's nostalgia talking but I feel like a lot of games nowadays are not as "polished" and cared about compared to nowadays, not implying games sucks now but I think there was really a sense of journey during the PS1 era for exemple, like FF7, VP Lenneth, Tales of[...], while the tales of series still do that and RPGs too overall it seems lacking, one of the Tales of had some mini games like playing cards, a more "newer" exemple would be say FFX, it got good soundtrack, mini games, the journey, crafting, so I like it since it's simple but got some depth, another exemple in the non turn based RPG game would be Rogue Galaxy (PS2).

If you say "there is monster Hunter or God Eater" I've never liked these, while I enjoy grinding (Disgaea player here) the grinding here sounds boring, and I've grinded MGS PW on PSP so....

Now obviously after many years experiencing video games some genre may seem dull thus nostalgia being a thing I guess but that doesn't mean I find all games to be bad, I enjoy Palworld, fear & hunger, Darkest dungeon and a lot of indie games but IMO none are a masterpiece unlike VP Lenneth IMO, fortunatly games are still fun and thanks to indie devs we always have some original games like 20XX that I still play to these day (magaman x roguelite) but maybe It's the uniqueness that I'm missing, for exemple Yakuza/Kiwami is pretty unique and I can't find many games that match all the checks.

Do you feel the same ? What do you think ? Maybe I've missed games that would match these games (I mean there are many games released on PC nowadays) ?

I do feel that way. I felt like after the PS1 era, the JRPGs of the PS2 era often leaned far too heavily into experimental systems that seemed to turn me off of the genre. Though it was also during this era that Dragon Quest VIII came out, which is not only the best in the series, but one of the best in the genre.

I skipped the genre for a long time before starting to look into what it's been up to since the PS4 and Switch generation, and it looks like there's been a happy medium found between traditional jRPGs and more experimental games.

FFIX was the gold standard of JRPG.

Glad that's it's not just me then, even if we are probably in the minority.

I like HD-2D and how Square has a fairly robust "B-Team" division thing going on. The lower budget stuff Square-Enix is doing these days reminds me a lot of the stuff they put out back in the 16 and 32 bit eras.
