I want to speak to my lawyer!
I've been watching a lot of youtube videos of people getting arrested, and I noticed that they almost always demand to speak t their lawyer. Like even crack heads off the street, do people just... have lawyers? Am I supposed to have a lawyer? Because I don't have one, and now I'm worried.

A lot of people have lawyers, but not everyone. And unless you need one on a regular basis, you don't have to have a lawyer. Not to mention, in most countries, when or if you're arrested, you have a right to counsel but if you don't have one or can't afford one, one will be appointed to you.

All you need to say is "I want a lawyer/speak to a lawyer" and nothing else, depending on the country, what you say at time of the arrest and after, can be used against you. Because you could potentially self-incriminate yourself and make any consequences worse.

I have a lawyer on retainer, costly but needed.

Oh ok. I just thought it was weird that every scuimbag getting arrested had a lawyer, but I suppose if they're being routinely arrested it would make sense that they have one. I don't have a lawyer because I'm a good boy 🙂

In the USA, everyone is appointed a lawyer unless they refuse, which then it is upon the court to decide if that decision is in the defendant's best interest, some states just don't care if you defend yourself, other states disallow it if the charges are for murder.

If you make too much money, you will need to retain a private lawyer as a public defense lawyer would be invalid due to your financial stability. Asking that you want to first speak to a (your) lawyer, is a way to enact your right to remain silent so you do not further incriminate yourself which can be used in a court of law, before and after arrest, it is wiser to remain silent.

Or reduced fee if you have earned income but some private lawyers pick up cases pro-bono for the clout and/or exposure, especially in medium-profile cases known to be dismissed or thrown out of court.
Yea you should of you can afford it I have one for my line of work

It is also good when you have relatives who are lawyers, my estate lawyer is my cousin.
Legal systems are so complex on purpose, not a natural byproduct. The law is BS, the criminal injustice system is BS, and many defense lawyers are predatory sacks of ♥♥♥♥, just like the prosecutors and police.

Prosecutors are the worst and it was natural for Kamal Harris for example to not appeal to many voters. It's a nice change of pace when you get a different type of prosecutor or AG etc in some places.

People get away with doing horrible things all the time without any legal consequence. Different categories of crimes are often underrepresented, meanwhile others overrepresented like drugs. Not to mention, the money aspect.

Humanity is trash, and so are its legal injustice systems.

Sure, is the US better than Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam(maybe)? Sure but that's not much to write home about is it?

In the USA, if you're rich, powerful and know the right people etc, then you can get away with murder, rape, extortion, etc.

Plenty of innocent people have accidentally self-incriminated themselves, even when they were trying to be helpful, open and honest.

And in case this good boy isn't aware, criminal defense is just one field. There are many different types of lawyers that specialize in different legal matters.
This is a legal defense strategy to avoid having to answer police questions, argue, offering explanations, or appearing rude, any of which could potentially worsen your situation. You have the right to remain silent to avoid self-incrimination.
Yes, on paper I or someone has the right but in reality cops threaten people all the time anyway?

The courts ruled that the cops can lie to you, in any fashion they care to, to elicit a confession.... Most folks aren't lawyers, and aren't really aware of just what their rights are, so the cops find it fairly easy to tell some whoppers, and get a confession.......

If being arrested, I know many people believe that talking to the police and being up front and honest is the best cause of action but it isn't. Saying the wrong thing to the police can cause you a life time of hurt and pain, so it's always best never to talk to the police without a lawyer, simple as that.

Believe it or not, the police are not your friend, the police don't care about you, your family or your feelings.
