That isn't entirely true; as a partial thunderbird myself I can tell you that picking a fellow turk up and doing some squats with them nestled in your shoulders can and will woo them into your good graces. the smaller you are relative to them the greater the wooing.
it has to be a tight hold though; if you let them have too much wiggle they'll think you are underestimating them and start pecking and things.
