Barry Lyndon
If he was a robot that you told to run away from everything, and he had free reign to do so, would his life have been different?

Or is that what the movie is describing?

What a beautiful, boring film.

Stanley Kubrick used to be one of my favorite filmmakers. The best thing about Barry Lyndon is that it may have inadvertently inspired the Dogme 95 movement, idk.

the movies critiques of progrommatic england and its effects on ireland fall flat and serve the english interest. kubrick mentioned this several times and thathis career as a countrrculturalist was essentially over long before anyone offered money for barry lyndon.

its watered down agit prop, but the storys narrative is informed by barrys perpetual inability to walk, constant fear of everything, and lack of empathy save as a self serving tool.

several times he is tempted eith crown or crownlike objects or situations where it would be a monumental catastrophe to put the crown on, borderline idiocy even, yet he is constantly wishing to wear one if possible. the finale is an ailing kings embrace, scorned, and rewritten to make your dtomach churn because of the framing.
