When it comes to survival (I’m speaking generally and this includes most animals) most females want to choose a mate that is capable of providing and even defending the family against threats. It would be counter intuitive to choose a mate that will only drag you down.

I’m speaking in a survival sense. In the modern world especially for humans it’s a tad bit different but the same case “could” happen.
