I still don´t get the connection to "butter" or "sauce", when it´s a mush, or purée. While it´s a "mus" - which is a purée made of fruits, but there is no word for it in English i suppose.
Funny that the wiki page says that in the UK it´s very uncommon to have American style apple sauce - when it was known in medieval Europe as well, so the immigrants would bring it to America.
Also there are only two ways to eat it: Either on its´own. Maybe with whipped cream. Or with potato pancakes.
Lots of "sauces" involve mush or puree. Like tomato sauce.
