question
What would happen if the earth just started rotating in the opposite direction for some reason

Depending where you are on the planet in relation to the poles, you’re rotating around at up to 1,040MPH.

It would depend on how fast the change in direction happens. If it’s gradual, you’d never notice.

If it’s sudden and drastic, you’ll either break your neck (if you’re exactly on the pole) or you’ll be flung violently in the direction against the change.

THIS :steamthis:

Also, the only "safe" places on earth at that moment would be the rotation poles, the exact poles. Staying there would not throw you away, just spin you really really fast and you'd probably need time to recover, but you'd be safer.

For one we would fling to the opposite direction and get smashed. But if we did somehow survive all of that then the sun would be setting on the east instead of the west.

Oh, you'd notice pretty quick even if it was gradual. Earth's rotation is the largest influence on our weather systems. Plus that extends the period of time in which the sun slows down before coming to a complete stop in the sky, baking one side of the planet and depriving the other until it picks up speed again.

The sun would rise in the West & set in the East.

I wonder if the rotation would affect the moon though. I’m in deep thought now.
If you were at the equator you would instantly fly at 1670 kph towards your previous direction.

The toilets would flush in the other direction.

I think I’ll be more concerned about not dying than the direction of the toilet flush.

Look up and see the moon orbiting at what appears to be twice the speed.

I meant notice in the sense of the feeling of momentum shifting.

All that other stuff is after the fact.

Science is a Mug, is not it?

The entire planet, from its core, would explode outwards.

Subtly, the Moon in our sky awakens. Suddenly, Our world Brakens.

Momentum is your being. Nobody elses.

Dont you worry on the sky. Worry on your brethren.

I imagine it would affect the ocean currents and jet stream, so Europe gets as cold as Canada, perhaps Vladivostok would become a summertime retreat.
