Do you have a favorite horror illustrator?
With Halloween around the corner, share some cool horror artists who create creepy art! :helloween:

I'll go first, Gekidan Inu Curry

The Inu Curry art style is heavily influenced by Russian and Czech animation, combining cute, doll-like horror with surrealism and a stop-motion aesthetic. It often features a mix of hand-drawn and collage-like elements, creating unsettling yet whimsical and childlike visuals. This style is best known from their work on the witch designs for the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Zdzisław Beksiński.
He was Polish painter with the creepy art style similar to Giger.

Beksiński's art is intensely powerful, it feels like a portal into surreal, dreamlike realms
Giger for sure, seeing a lot of good stuff on youtube videos, guessing it's AI stuff but don't know the channel Esoterica has a lot of great horror/occult art, and anything Lovecraftian but especially the giant amorphus things covered in tentacles, eyes and teeth/mouths that stuff is my go to.
I really don't think it's possible to top H. R. Giger

I've also seen Beksiński and think he's great, as well as some contemporary artists that do cool ♥♥♥♥ with biomechanics.

But I still have yet to see anyone who comes close to matching the obsessive detail, intricacy, and continuity in Giger's best works.
Gustave Dore, maybe. Though he's known for his woodblock prints, rather than illustrations.

I can guarantee you've seen his scenes from the Divine Comedy and Rime of the Ancient Mariner at some point, even if you don't recognize his name.

Also, Go Nagai.

Yes, this is not an aging classic. A hallmark of Giger's style was the fusion of mechanical parts with organic and necrotic themes. It's a shame that the film's alien design features almost no visible mechanical parts, such as tubing, making it look entirely chitinous.
Katsuhiro Otomo

And Hayao Miyazaki

And Keiji Nakazawa
(I'm NOT going to show any Barefoot Gen here)
Hmm, I suppose Otomo could be in the conversation...

He'd definitely get a vote from me too, but I never clocked him as "horror." But you do find themes & images in his work that one might consider horrifying.

One of the coolest things about Otomo is he drew entire worlds: way more detailed than most ever see. Take any given still from his films, and it's likely you're only seeing 5-10% of a massive, complex, and fully fleshed-out cityscape that is never used in its entirety.

Given that he was one of the most famous artists and illustrators of the 19th century, his engravings are a standard part of the curriculum in any art history class.

Yes, I like classical paintings and old engravings with biblical motifs with characters of angels and demons. Paradise Lost, Lucifer

Yes, these are true titans of horror art and truly inspiring designs for alien creatures. However, when aliens are depicted, they most often seem to be a combination of lizards, dinosaurs, and insects, with bare skin resembling that of an elephant. I believe that real aliens could have more fur or feathers and should be more visually appealing. Earth's predators, such as lions, jaguars, and wolves, possess an aesthetically pleasing appearance, beautiful coloring, and streamlined shapes.

Junji Ito is also on my top list, absolutely unique atmosphere and style
