I don't know why he still has a job.
He still has a career because every time he does this, it's as a fun pedagogical exercise that gets taken too seriously by anyone reporting on it, who seems to think he's being serious.
When really, it's just fun for him and his colleagues to think about and speculate on.
It's more of a "What if..." paper that gets taken too seriously just because it's someone with a Ph.D. doing it.
He's an avid believer in alien life though, so obviously he's gonna be thinking about the possibility of it being real, especially when he speculates.
If you were an invading alien force perhaps hiding in a giant asteroid is the best way to approach your target. Its always a good feeling when he's wrong. Lets just hope he's wrong this time too.
But supposing he's right, how would we defend against it?
