This thread is from Nightwatch by Terry Pratchett when two very up and coming prominent people are found to be in the vicinity of each other.
They have to be careful on what they talk about due to each of their family's history being violent towards each other.

To avoid a scene of bad manners (and therefore yet another war) they are forced to find something safe to talk about.
Standing or sitting is the subject they come up with.

Sitting seems to be a sign that you are less approachable and want to stick to your group or away from people.

Run security pass-bys then leave. Find out months later those who believed stronger for staying getting beaten up for fun was the next party. Stopped seeing them as parties. Quite sure stopped being worried and just find ways to navigate which includes sitting on chair arms and shifting lamps from one table to next while tapping out the cord for better lighting and prep for fighting.
