How did they make money years ago?
You all ever wonder how philosophers made their money back in like the 16th century? Like did they just get drunk, walk out on their porch and yell something like "fear what you may become or become that which you fear." Then a random crowd of people below them were like "Another banger! This dude can't miss!"

If I ever wondered that, I would use the internet to find out the answer instead of asking the question to randos.
they dug around in the wet soil with their bare hands and found little bits of gold they then sold for a little bit of a fortune. don't bother trying the same tactic though, you won't find anything except possibly an unexploded bomb or mine that might blow up right in your face.
I'm pretty sure that they got money off personal relationships and selling the books that they wrote. Atleast that's what I know was for Karl Marx.
The best philosophers got hired by rich people to entertain them, which makes you wonder if there was some sort of philosophers competition market going on. and some kid was like "mom.. I'm going to be a philosopher and live the easy life!" but then he turned out to be a dumbass and everybody was like "don't hire that guy, he doesn't know any good philosofics"

Kinda like how everybody wanted to be in a band during the Beatles, because it seemed like the easy life. and how everybody wanted to be a DJ in the 90s and a Streamer in the 10s.
Imagine some kid wearing white robes going all "The water in the stream is like the blood in our veins" and the dad is rubbing his hands and thinking "I got me one of those philosofficers" but then the kid is like "Like the poop that comes out of our butts and-" and the father just does a facepalm.
Philosophers supported themselves in various ways, such as receiving sponsorship from the nobility, teaching at institutes, publishing books, or working in medicine and law. Others found support within the Church by working as monks, priests, or theologians.
Philosophy just isn't something you do to make money, even today. They did it as a hobby, while making money some other way.
They probably actually had jobs whilst they “preached” on the side. Kinda like me. I’m not a full time cosplayer; I have a job.
Marx lived with his parents, funded by his lawyer father and his mother who's grandfather gave her a cut of his large manufacturing business until his 30's at which point he then with his totally not gay lover Engels for the rest of his life and both of them were financed by Engel's industrialist father.
Seneca was hired.
They were teachers, advisors and got paid for speaking their ideas.
A lot of ways to get paid throughout the ages.

Renaissance a lot of good ideas floating around then and people hired on talent and fashion.
It was prestige to have intellectuals and inventors and artists and capable soldiers too all that helped with political power and influence of the public - and more importantly the public funds to your cause.
Have you ever watched the Greek soccer team? They don't actually try to get the ball. Instead they meander around the field philosophizing until the ball comes to them

Spoilers: They owned slaves
They probably had a proper job they were good at, became successful with that, then wrote a book about it and sold that to make even more money.
