"Are videogames art?" (Thesis in the Art History department) NEED YOUR HELP! ;)
Dear Community!

I'm working on a thesis within Art History department of the University of Warsaw, Poland. I'm discussing the democratization of the discipline which can occur by the inclusion of new forms of creative expression, in this case a digital medium, a videogamee. I won't bore you with academic babble, suffice to say, the topic is fascinating starting with difficulties of defining what art is today, what games are (the taxonomy) and what is the set of characteristics a videogame should have in order to be considered art in the art historical sense.

We do have game studies out there that research games in an out from so many different perspectives, yet there is very little actual art historians who bother with games. So my goal here is to try and add my viewpoint that would help introduce videgames into the field as a seriousl reserach subject. Art history is still considered quite historic and tradition focused even though it accepted photography, film, performance and all forms of avante-garde art as its object of study.

So long story short, we know we cannot talk about games with exclusion of gamers, so I'm inviting you to help me out by answering these three short questions:

1. What is art to you and how do you understand it?
2. What is a videogame to you and how would you define it?
3. Do you think videogames are art and if so, why? Or you think they are not, then if so why? Or maybe they can be under certain circumstances, if so under which and why?

My stance towards art is that while sometimes it makes sense to make art exclusive (understanding art more deeply and caring for it properly does require some level of knowledge that exceeds what general population knows about art), excluding the "receipient of a videogame art form", would greatly diminish the analysis and remove one of the most crucial part of what makes up a videogame. an artform -- the player.

So, if you have a moment, and you'd like to join in the conversation, I'd be happy to talk to you and I would love to hear what you think.

You would likely get more answers by doing an on-campus survey than you'd get in the steam general sections as most people tend to be playing games rather than using the forum. If this is for a thesis, you need a practical minimum of responses and your local educational community would be one place you can start.
You can also ask any local LAN center, video game store, or otherwise to take survey forms if they are willing and to pick them up later to increase the quantity of feedback.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not performing a formal inquiry. I just wanted to introduce the topic for a casual discussion, slightly framing it with questions. But an outside form would be from technological standpoint a good idea, but I don't want to add additional layer of complexity to the post. We all know that when things become too much, people just wont do it. :)

Maybe it wont lead to anything, but I guess that's a risk I'm taking. :)

However, if I will be contituing with the research in this area after this thesis I will consider more formal interviews, thanks for an idea.:)

This isn't the place for this. It's off topic. Speak to your supervisor for more realistic survey methods.

1. What is art to you and how do you understand it?
Art is any creation made by living beings that releases emotions

2. What is a videogame to you and how would you define it?

Im gonna use the dictionary definition for it "a game in which the player controls moving pictures on a screen by pressing buttons"

3. Do you think videogames are art and if so, why? Or you think they are not, then if so why? Or maybe they can be under certain circumstances, if so under which and why?

I believe videogames are art as long as they are made by living beings only then they become an expression of creativity.

I reject to call any AI project as "art"

1. Tricky question. I'd say that art is any human creation that I admire.

2. A videogame is any kind of game played on a screen.

3. Generally speaking, yes, I consider videogames a form of art, unless they're overly simple like Pong.

This would be reply as well. Well said Vaulty.

I suggest reading Steam's guidelines...

there's a section about survey there...

2. Really!? This kind of definition is flawed and obsolete.
What if the game is controlled via a touchscreen, with no buttons?

What if the game uses the mobile device accelerometer to play? :)
(i.e. tilt controls, no touch)

Better question...what isn't art?
nope. video games are interactive entertainment, not artistic expression.
Jololo 11 月 8 日 上午 9:23
They can containt art but they aren't art itself
Sciencemile 11 月 8 日 上午 9:25
They are art.

What if the touch screen actually has a digitizer which you are indeed interacting with... just like any ordinary button...

And you're interacting with an accelerometer as well...

So that definition still hold water...

In Germany, for example, there has long been intense debate about Nazi symbolism in movies and games, about why games are/were not considered art and what the difference is.

In short, what is art and what is not, is prescribed by authorities, the state, "morality police", as well as various interest groups. Not forgetting religious associations. People generally have little to no say in the matter.
