Except when SCOTUS told him he couldn't, he then corrected course and tried to do it the proper way.
Thing is that the prices haven't been passed along to the customer in most cases yet. The C.P.I. is on the same stable trajectory it has been on since July 2022 under Biden[fred.stlouisfed.org]. The only prices that have been explicitly affected by tariffs are Nintendo Switch accessories. Some people are also saying that tariffs are exacerbating the drought induced beef shortages since the U.S.A. can not offput its lack of beef with Brazilian beef, but in the meantime smart people are avoiding beef, and we are getting price rigging investigations.
Playstation 5 prices went up, but that's something Sony was probably planning irrespective of the tariffs given that the slim refresh didn't have the traditional price drop, and other regions got a similar price hike on the base model early on. The only way it even marginally makes sense for regions other than the U.S.A. to be paying more because of tariffs is if Sony is subsidizing American tariffs with international price hikes to try and continue collecting licensing fees on American game sales, in which case Trump's "other countries are paying for it" rhetoric rings relatively true.
Most people should be happy with this situation since the tariffs are being paid by businesses, and the businessmen are probably still paying less in taxes than they would if wealth loathing democrats were in charge.
Moreover, yes, you should be at least somewhat happy with a $2000 dividend because with the way taxes work, the government could just instead elect to pocket that money to spend recklessly on whatever pet peeve wasteful tax expenditures you might have (and every taxpayer has at least some). This ends up being an offset, so the net mathematical effect is that you are effectively taxed only $10,000 instead of $12,000, assuming you really were charged $12,000 because of tariffs in the first place, which is doubtful.
Complaining about this is like looking a gift horse in the mouth.
