do Western localizations get censored a lot ?
i found it is strange that this seems to be more common in recent years going on with anime games. I have a game when the japanese version does include the fact this guy still remembers and makes a reference to other person, yet in the english version, they removed or changed it to something else.

Do these japanese companies hire fans with biases or something? I swear this wasn't a case before with this series.

they used to, yes. its quite a bit more rare these days, but still happens sometimes

and actually, the japanese versions of games are often heavily censored too. but for violence, not sex/nudity.

Those are usually handled by few companies with ideologies and activism backgrounds who take advantage of the monopoly to do whatever they want (this or pure imcompetence).

Another example, in the west the VA scene isn't as big as in Japan, so they just hire the "most famous ones" which usually does not equal the best ones, or the ones with heavy biases, ideology and activism backgrounds.

That's why you sometimes see some drama here and there about some VAs or localization overall.

Video games that are made in Japan and localised into English are almost always changed or censored. It was worse in the past, but it's without a doubt prevalent still.

For example, couple hints stuffs and that it can anger some part of the fans if it is controversial. Usually people who do this often either are fans who have biases or people do the background of the content they are doing. No way if you handled it to a person who knows nothing about the series then they would do this

But why? I don't get why they need to change unless it is obvious. I found in some case it got destroyed to the point it is a complete different context.

yes. theres often removed content too. like in yakuza there are removed subquests

i dont like it when they add some ♥♥♥♥ ass zoomer neologisms to the subtitles, they'll age horribly when people forget what they mean
Well that depends on what it is Japan has no filters to my knowledge there are literally games where you uh.... Do stuff you shouldn't with minors in a school setting... That are illegal everywhere but Japan. As far as censorship in games movies and TV no I don't see it very often I can watch a Serbian film if I chose to

They don't need to be changed. The problem is the companies doing these localizations are based in blue cities and they consequently change content to match their culture.

It depends, some big game companies have their own localization team, but most of the time they hire companies specialized in localization, VAs, ect ect... who have nothing to with the game company or the game itself they are not fans or are linked to the original media in any way (presumably) which can lead to innacurate traductions, censorship, indroduction of ideologic biases, ect ect ect...
That's why you can find alternative localizations in the form of "fansubs patchs" or the like made by actual fans who can be more accurate, with less censorship or such.

It's a known issue that always been there, it just been amplified last years due do a specific ideology that inflate some people's ego to a point they consider themselves superior enough to sabotage or "fix" someone else's work.

Some localizations did things for the better. Woolsey was known for it back in the day; because of his work, Kefka from Final Fantasy VI went from a one-note punchline to a charming and tragic villain. To the point where his portrayals in Dissidia almost feel like a step back.

Pokemon was also subject to this on a smaller scale during Diamond and Pearl's localization, as one of the translators was a member of the Something Awful forums (I think) and put his experience to use by throwing in some internet lingo. Granted that it aged quickly, but it somehow wraps back around to giving the games some charm today.

But these instances are far and few in between.

After becoming fluent in Japanese, I noticed that there are a lot of censorship in English anime subtitles and English localization of Japanese and Chinese games. Many people also pointed out that light novels and manga are also censored a lot in the translations

Now I will only read / watch / play content in their original languages

women are censored less than men. white men are censored more than any other group on the planet on game forums and games

They're a bloody nuisance.
Not only is their "localization" bad, some dialogues just turn into complete nonsense and ignores the overall tone or plot.
