Yup. It's kinda like saying you don't like 'Chinese food', or some other grand generalization.
Personally, the first anime I ever watched was Gundam. I didn't understand what the hell was going on half of the time. Why did the people have pink/blue/green hair? Why were all the Japanese people white? WTF is a Big Zam and who would ever name anything something so stupid? Why are there so many Nazis? Why is the dialogue so awful? Can't they afford translators, or better yet, just someone native who can tell them what is and is not stupid?
Of course, I was much younger then. I grew up, and I still have the same questions about the genre, in addition to others. Why are all girls cats? Why is every male protagonist some weepy boy or Meg Ryan? Why is the theme of everything strength of will? That sounds familiar, it was a tenet in Bushido, but somehow in this genre having strength of will ends up with being able to generate a nuclear explosion. I think perhaps the Japanese horribly misunderstand what happened in WW2.
Of course, part of that is just western bias. I don't understand Japanese plays, either. They are hopelessly bizarre in a venue that is hopelessly bizarre in every country to begin with because actors are weird. But Japan goes beyond that. Everybody in the world thinks that Japan is weird. Case-in-point: Santa Claus-themed sex hotels.
Taking care of a virtual pet, even if it is associated with a notable lame TV series, seems like a breakthrough to me. I played the games, even watched a few episodes. I once served with a Marine fire-team that called itself "Team Rocket." Admittedly, we were just goofing around, but the exposure value can't be denied.
I'm sure I just need more exposure to understand WTF is going on in anime. Some people either don't care to or just have the same problem, but ultimately, I'd say it's more due to lack of exposure than any one series being bad. They're all weird as hell.
I think that the animé/manga community hasn’t grown up and I think the reason why is (and I don’t mean to offend anyone here) but pokemon and to a lesser extent DBZ set a low stranded for animé and manga (BTW I like DBZ but just for its fights and bruce faulconer soundtrack) and writers in Japan just saw the pokemon formula as easy money and repeated it over and over again and kept with the same standard and I think there are far to many battle shounen because of it.
I think the main reason why i am looking down on anime is the fact that pedophilia seems to increase lately, within them, and many fans are actually strangely fine with it, just because they call it loli-con.
Another obvious problem, in my opinion, is that every anime seems to need a swimsuit episode, for whatever contrived reason. There are few anime that do not get produced exactly in the very same way as the others in its genre, its like there is almost no innovation anymore. The character archetypes are the same, there will be a swimsuit episode and a large amount of them are based on the harem trope. And if they are harem, you can expect it to include one loli character, which i find increasingly disgusting the older i get.
Having people commenting on it, by condoning sexual assault, and talking about fapping makes it also increasingly impossible to recommend anime as a whole to people, which is sad, especially since there are quite a few 'grown up' anime. Unfortunately, they are few and far in between.
Sometimes it feels like they couldn't even do a show like Sailor Moon anymore, without a swim suit episode every season. And the ones that break the mold seem to come only Gen Urobuchi. Maybe Hajime Isayama will do more than Attack on Titan but at this point i doubt it.
Im not saying that all animé are all battle shonen (My favourite series right now is attack on titan) it's just that since DBZ AOT is the 1st series that isn’t a battle shonen to get super popular.
The closest that a non-BS came to becoming super popular before AOT was Death note and ghost in the shell.
And I don’t think that most people judge the entire community based off one animé I think they are judging the community based off multiple amines naruto OP bleach DBZ just to name a few. I’ve done my best to stay away from the animé community manly on you tube because it feels like a war is being fought people bring up manga sales like it judge’s quality fighting over witch series is better and trashing other people’s opinions. (I do like sawyer7mage and on a good day king of lightning) I have encountered good community’s like the one on steam which is why I’m posting my views hear :).
It's not just a type of cartoon. Just as American Television shows have their ratings and genres, so does Anime. Once someone learns a bit about how Anime series' are classified it becomes much more accessible. As they understand the difference between shows and look for what they find appealing to watch. If I don't like reality TV, I'm gonna avoid Jersey Shore. If I don't like ecchi I can avoid Kis x Sis or Highschool DxD.
As far battle shonen, In my opinion these shows are what made Anime. I mean Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, DBZ, Pokemon are some of the longest running most popular shows around. And a lot of people gain interested in anime via these shows, which lead to them then expand into masterpieces such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Steins Gate along with dozens of others.
just my .02 if it makes any sense.
The harem shows are just a product of supply and demand. I like to just avoid them, and swimsuit episodes are usulally just fillers.
Ive never seen a gaggle of obese teens with pokedexs having fake battles in mall corridors but I have seen them shadow fighting wearing those sttupid headbands.
All that jiggling.
I'll never be the same.
In my case, I like western cartoons so I don't much like anime. Except that joke shin chan dub. That one was funny.
Nah, you just about nailed it
