Any particular genre or type of story that interests you? Would help to recommend. Cowboy Bebop is great though, can recommend that. Same for Evangelion.

Supernatural.

There's only one season, but it's a great season.
Well that depends on your tastes! What Western works did you like?

I loved Evangelion, but my friend thought it was pretentious garbage. It's certainly not what I'd call a "starter anime" in any case.
everybody has to go through the initiation of boku no pico so start there then when you are plenty traumatized you can then watch any anime

i think cowboy bebop or samurai champloo are perhaps the best "starter" animes to exist. they are short (i think both 26 episodes), original stories (they are not based on mangas), and focus on relatively small casts so everybody gets quite a bit of development and screen times.

also dat music

Any really. But I'm a sci fi person.

In that case I would also really recommend Ghost in the Shell. Specifically the series called "Stand Alone Complex," there's a lot of other stuff from the same franchise but that's the only one I've personally watched. Heard the 1995 movie was really good too.

My love of that show is legendary, might be my favorite anime. But drugs must have been heavily involved in its production. The pacing gets crazy at times, the writing's quality jumps up and down by the minute, and much of it is left to the viewer to figure out by themselves. I don't know if I would recommend it as a first anime, ahah.

That said, it's got one of the best protagonist in modern fiction. That's one aspect of Geass that is absolutely flawless.

did you ever watch s-cry-ed? it always felt like a poor mans "code geass" to me in some ways, maybe because i remember watching them at the same time growing up.

I hadn't heard of it, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

There are many such cases of animes trying to recapture Code Geass' lightning in the bottle, and only managing to distill its very worst aspects. Guilty Crown and Valvrave the Liberator come to mind, though the latter arguably qualifies as "so bad it's good".
