Outside of RPGs You also don´t have total freedom.
But most games which are labeled RPG aren´t really RPGs, oftentimes they´re just called like that because they feature character development.
Because game development were limited. Trust me, if they could make an SNES, or C64 game with thousands of choices and outcomes we would have seen a few titles pop up.
Just like Arthur Morgan getting tuberculosis after being coughed on - not because he's been smoking cigarettes every day since he was 5 yrs. old.
I could chat about determinism vs free will in games but it seems a wasted effort.
I'll help you start :
if (player1 != "yes") {
doNo()
}
else if {
//insert about 500 choices just for starting scene alone.
}
I am sure the Project Manager will be happy to allocate paid hours for this.
-not real code don't throw a wedgie about it.
If You want to play a game which doesn´t have a story, You´d need to look for "sandbox" - then You can write Your own story. RPG is about story.
Play Kenshi. Probably still the best sandbox game. But it´s not for everyone, because: no story, and no objectives.
