It's a "near/narrow miss," as opposed to a "far/wide miss." That doesn't preclude it from being a "near hit."

I still find it silly in my opinion.

I nearly die = I almost died
I nearly lived = I almost lived but now I’m dead

But that’s just me. *shrugs*

In reality trains that went choo choo were steam engine trains, it's the sound of the steam escaping the piston at the end of it's course. I doubt that there's any of those still in circulation

So most trains now days would have just a rumble muffled diesel engine sound or some kind of electric whine which doesn't sound like choo choo or woo woo
