i have before, would not do it again no. but i think it should be a requirement in society that everyone works at least one retail job so they can be developing empathy for such workers.
in my dim and distant past i have. its ok as "holiday work"

i wouldnt recommened it as a career choice

Obvs. ymmv
I liked working retail when I did from 1995-2000

that said it was a single store owned by a family.. and that gave me much freedom.. and room to quickly grow to assistant manager while also doing stuff like design the storefront and such..

**I never liked the larger chains much.. for they are far to hirarcical.. instead of thinking here is a dude doing a managers job and an store designers job on a shelffillers wage.. they were punishing me for not sticking within the exact defined room of that ONE function..

and sure even in the family store pay was per day.. I was however more than willing working overtime.. even. though it not gave me extra pay for well if you allow me so much freedom to basicly deciede myself what needs doing fasttrack me to manager and other nice jobs instead of crappy shelves.. plus provide me extra boons like purchasing at cost.. not merely 10% off as most staff got AND getting my lunches fully paid by the compagny..
plus alowing me to deciede myself when I wanted a break as long as I got my asigned tasks done.. trusting me I would not take more than 1 hour of breaks in a workday.. and not complaining if I was late but not more than 15 minutes late.. as they know i would just take a little less breaks to make up for it..
nor complaining if I left eartly when I had to for personal reasons..
well all that buys you some loyality.. if they are flexible than so am I..

so provided it is a store that give me similair space.. and has a similair atmosphere...
and allows me to fasttrack to be store manager in a year and owner in 3 years.. I would not mind returning to retail.... should I ever for some reason no longer be able to teach..

I always considered working of retail the best of the teeenage and student jobs I had...

I mean look at the other teenage student jobs each was SO much worse :

working in a garden center... SO much worse.. exposed to rain all the time.. and way to much fysical work.. of carrying iheavy items around.. and even pruning and planting is rather heavy work..

working in a production hall.. reperitve work which is sucking the soul out of you... and the colgues all braindead so you cannot even have a talk while your bored out of your skilll...

working in the kitched of an elderly home.. well being essentially a kitchen aid.. with the chef shouting at you but than with unedable crap leaving the kitchen instead of nice food..

working as gardener.. mowing laws.. cleaning between tiles... trimming hedges.. again heavy work... constant rain.. and dumb idiot colegues..

working in a callcenter.. you are the person that yourself hate to be called by and hang up on selling the crap you want nobody to buy.. while having to read these anoying braindead thought up by some marketing idiot.. "congratulations you won a prize yadada messages that make you feel like a repeating rec9ord.." " when all you do is trying to sell them crap..
meanwhile never getting a bonus despite being the top seller cause they always found a reason to deny you one... setting the targets at a point nobody could reach.
**this I would say was my wort job!

delivering newspapers/folders... oh boy did that suck and the pay was stupid low.. pure slavewage.. like you spend every day 4 hours, 6 days a week and got like 10 guilders (4.50 euro)

safety officer at a metrostation..
-> on paper.. we were there to help the travelers and keep order and only during calemities spring in action.. in practice they wanted us to not show our face and hide from the public.. and basicly sit in a container with nothing to do in 10 hour shifts.. only so they met a goverment regulation... that the station was manned..
-> I was terminated for getting so bored out my skull I did come out and did help the public as well as grabbed a few vanals who were destrying the station..
**but the bosses only saw.. there are more incidents when you work.. so you got to go
(broken stations were not counted as incidents.. but perps arrested were.. basicly they encouraged just NOT looking)

----
the only other good job I had during those years was as programming job... in an office.. nice having my own desk (not cubicle.. just a normal office floor.. I could have a talk with colegues.. grab a coffee.. it was nice... I still liked retail better for I like to work with people.. the interaction I have with students now and I had with customers in retail..
***
in an office writing code.. I did not have that.. --- so I rather work in retail than in an office.. but rather in that office than in any of those other jobs that WERE crap

and again provided I have a retail shop thats family owned.. chains have a toxic culture..
Welcome to Costco I love you

tldr version :

I like teaching better
but I liked working in retail and would not mind working it it again.
but given I was already.. store dresser (responsible for window frame) at 15.. assistant manager at 16 (responsible for working in new hires and deciede who to keep and who to fire).. and deparment head at 17 (fully responsible to decide what and where I would place on my shelves.. as well as what and how much i ordered to fill them)
if I were to reenter retail I would want a fast track to store manager and not stuck in a low position.
I kind of did a few years ago when I worked as a cart pusher.

Honestly wasn't that bad of a job. You're outside in the weather all day, but when the weather is nice then it can be pretty relaxing. You only have 1 job so you can just zone out. I don't mind repetition at all, so I was never bothered by going back and forth.
You also lose a hell of a lot of weight with all that walking its insane. You can eat whatever you want because you're most likely going to burn it all off and then some the next day anyways.

The job I have now is much better, but if I could go back to cart pushing but retain the pay and benefits I have now I probably would tbh
part of me still miss my first normal job as retail for led screen, maybe if I stayed on that job long enough, I can learn something from others that's selling product from other company.

I even miss it when I say the selling pitch wrong and see customer making an expression like a big frown.

the selling pitch for led screen usually cant go very wrong.
Yes, but only in California.

I would try my best to walk out the door with more product each day than the customers are carrying out themselves without paying.

It would be a challenge but I would do my best.
I never been in the retail business as employee, only in wholesale.
I rather have 1 or a few customers I know well than have to deal with a lot of unknown people.
In wholesale it pretty informal cause it a small world and everyone knows each other, which is pretty relaxed to work compared to retail I think.
Back when I use to work at wal-mart customer complained so much about me that even corporate knew me by name. But they couldn’t fire me because I was following policy. I mean… they technically still can but then no one would be working the register since I’m usually the only one. And yes… more registers would be opened if they hired more people but nah.

would you work retail?

In Europe about 30-50% of jobs (depending on country) are retail so most Europeans have at least once in their lifetime worked in retail.

Not much of a choice to be honest
I already served my time in retail purgatory, never again. I'd frankly rather go back to the plastics factory where if I went home everyday with a new burn.

false... in netherlands 9% of working people works in retail,
in usa this is 12.5% and thus higher.
however with almost ALL retailjobs (likely over 90%) going to teenagers.. ages 14 to 17... due those costing only 1/5th to 1/3d of what an adult cost... it is the most common job under teenagers in that agerange.. while it is a rare job to do past 18yo..
