Nah...I kept my vehicle locked and lived in a good neighborhood...Had plenty of friends who lost their Pioneers and the like...Maybe I was lucky because I had a crappy car stereo... :)

I solder fish hooks to the back of the amp/radio. The thief gets a nice painful surprise.

Was stealing the car radio a thing back in the old days? I wouldn't know, my first car at least had CDs with central locking.

It's something I vaguely recollect hearing of happening, acryphorically, but truth be told it's kind of silly. to sit in your car in silence just because of that because you'd just buy a handheld transistor radio to replace it. Those suckers have existed since the 1950s[www.ericwrobbel.com], and even back in 2013 they would've been fairly cheap.

This is one of those songs where you don't try to think so much about the actual real life logistics, and more about the symbolism of the circumstance, which in this case is to say being left alone with your thoughts without anything to distract you.

Even the singer doesn't understand why he doesn't just buy a new car radio.

The tires are worth more and you don't even need to go inside the vehicle.

And exactly how do you plan on removing the tires? You'd need a jack.
Nope, 'cause it only looked like a radio

I do miss that car, though...

Technically yes, because they stole the whole car out of a parking lot at a casino in Vegas.

Living in a good neighbourhood can put a target on your vehicles. My parents live in a home with a 7 digit valuation in one of the most desirable areas in their county. Crime overall there is extremely low... but their proximity to Merseyside means organised gangs sometimes go prowling late at night for anything from catalytic converters to entire vehicles.

I did have a Pioneer radio/CD player nicked from my first car at 17 yo though. My Dad found out who did it and erm... roughed him up a bit.

Living in a good neighborhood also means neighbors have your back and the cops patrol regularly...I did not live in a big city with gang activity...Just dopes who hit the pawn shops afterwards...They usually got caught eventually...

Yes it was big business on the none taxable side of life.

A big joke that nowadays would be scorned at but it was true and so the radio stations broadcast it with the DJs laughing and everybody i knew found it funny.

Someone put a sign on their car 'My radio has already been stolen so dont smash the window'

So someone smashed the windows and put 'go and get another one then' .

Lovable Plucky Britain of the 90s.

- you had people buying them competing with offering the best prices.
I had nothing to do with it mind but it was hard not to see who was buying either in pub or at work.

people who steal car radio's need a flogging.

even if you do crime.. be ethical about it.

you steal 100 euro out my wallet.. you gain 100 euro I loose 100 euro.. nothing is wasted.

but if you hammer in my car window.. it will cost me 600 euro to replace it.. and 2000 more if you also damage the paint doing it.. than you break my dashboard open to cut the cables.. thats 800 more damage.. all to steal a radio that did cost me perhaps 200 euro..

and than you sell it for like 30 euro on a black market..
causing me over 3000 euro in loss to you gaining 30 euro is idiotic.. I rather have you call at my door and just ask the 30 euro...

also.. they never target the really wealthy.. they have garages and fenced off houses and alarm systems.. it is always those who are BARELY better off than the poorest and living in the area right next to them they target.. aka working people often below median income..
**
again if you steal from a lavisly wealthy person.. thats also wrong but much more forgivable than if you steal from a poor person

so if you have to be a criminal at least be an ethical one.. only take proportionally little (meaning you either steal from very wealthy or only steal like 2 euro a person..) and have your gain be at least 90% of the loss you causing..

my bike has been stolen like 10 times in my life.. and while insured.. I get a new bike.. but I have to pay for that new bike insurance again... and insurance on bikes is like 60% the price of a bike... so a 1200 euro bycyle stolen.. still is easely a 750 euro loss to me..
-- and those criminals who steal them sell them for like 50-100 euro..
also they usually are gangs of teen migrants.. who have no buisnuiss stealing from the natives in the country where they are guest.. and certainly not for they not do it cause of hunger or need but cause they want to buy 1000 euro phones, and 10000 euro sneakers and gucci bags and all that nonsence I cannot afford..

for mine is far from the only bike such aholes steal.. they usually load like 50 in a van.. not even bothing to unlock them (and drive off.. and than go machine away the locks in a shed.. and than sell them very often openly online (police is lazy even if I make an apointment and have my own bike in hand the criminal found.. they won't come to arrest the ahole.. and if I try to take it back if I see it in the backyard of a thief.. THAN they may come for breaking into their terrain.. police is stupid like that..

A guy I used to provide personal security for long ago.
He would figure out how much money a person had on them by what they did in prison and how long they were in for then take most of it no matter how little they had through pool.
He would hustle a nun if he could.

-The only time anybody got a hit on him was when I was not there. The guy who did it was an ok guy too.

I remember my dad telling me stories in the 90s that people break into cars for their car radio. So you’re telling me they had time to break the window, get in, use a screwdriver to take out the radio, and walk away like nothing happened? And don’t old cars have alarms too? Be kinda hard to not hear it.

yeah those sort of aholes deserve to be beaten up daily...

I can forgive a poor person stealing a bread.. especially if he steals it from some millionair...
thats just desperation.. still not good.. I likely would have given them the bread.. but understandable...

and even if you go steal say 300 euro from a multinational with fraud so a person on welfare can allow their children to go on a schooltrip or even merely some presents at christmas.. or getting an icecream.. non essential.. but still things that are very sad to have children grow up without.. I still understand..

but stealing from people who are poor/bad off.. or stealing just out of greed.. that is inexcusable..
