Self-declared Christians are the persecutors of the saints and the people at large in the end times.
We atheists have our hands clean on this one.
However I would say that is a generous time period to be in as I assume not many people will even make it to the 3.5 year mark unless they were believers and avoided God's wrath via the seals and trumpets.
Revelations says many Christians will be deceived and follow The Beast. They will think The Beast is a man of God. Together, they will persecute the people 'in the name of the Beast'.
It's only after the Abomination in the Temple that these Christians realize they've been fooled. Too late for them at that point.
Here's the flow of Revelations:
Christians support The Beast and bring him to political power
The Beast and his followers persecute the people
The Beast hates the nation to his south and will work against them (The Bible specifically mentions persecuting an ethnic people in the agriculture trade)
The Beast will make a Peace Deal in the middle east with Israel
The Beast will assert economic dominance over the whole world
The Beast will declare himself God while in Israel
Christians realize they've been fooled and turn against the Beast, who uses all the power they gave him to persecute them
Nations rise up against The Beast and position for War
Jesus comes back and stops it
1000 years peace
Beast is let out again for a short time, then judgement day.
Okay, John Nelson Darby.
