Downside is once you start the coals will burn for awhile. Might not be worth it if only cooking a small amount unless the flavor is worth it to you.
The real question is whether to supplement it with smoking pellets, chips or chunks. (NEVER soak the smoking wood. If you want to raise humidity, use a pyrex bowl of water)
Also, always use proper natural lump charcoal. Not cheap, phony briquettes.
An absolute artist when it comes to grilling steaks and/ or fish.

Have to go refill one of my 20# tanks tonight for the firepit.
Charcoal / Wood etc is good for when you want to get that flavour into it.
You can do the same with gas with your own specialised spray but the solid fuel you can do a little more with it.
Gas = for easier and more consistent cooking.
Solid = For when you want to muscle it and give that real McCoy taste.
For everyday use, Gas would be the sensible option.
