You might not find much on the Steam forums themselves.
You should try to find open communities related to the engine you use, also modding is a good way to build a bit of fame and show what you're able to do.
I can only give broad directions sorry.

Is there softwares and / or engines you're familiar with?
Personally I would try to approach groups related to engines / softwares (Blender, Autodesk, Unity, Unreal ect ect...)

Map design as a concept, creating a map using whatever assets for an game engine, or something else?

Being clear will probably help with your CV. More is better from what I know when it comes to trying to find work. :D

This "Off Topic" is not a good place to find people or projects.
Most good people get banned and dont bother coming back to it.

I'd like to suggest finding a game you like and approaching the Modders on the game specific forum.

From there you can get more contacts with people who really want the help.
I cleaned out my friends list some time ago of majority of people but some of them were really into modding and changing maps on different games.
So the people are out there in Steam, just got to get playing the games and checking their forums and getting to know people.
