How would I begin to make a game?
Hello all,

I am just wondering how I could begin to make a 3d game.

I've made a few (pretty crap) 2d games in the past, and I have an idea for a game that would be best if it were 3d.

Which programs would I use?

How do you begin something like this?

The end product would realistically be a 2-3 hour singleplayer game. All I'll say is you'll play as a cat. It would be similar in scale to the original octodad game (not deadliest catch).

I am aware that it is a massive time sink, and I know how much work can go into projects like these. I've made games and animation before, and I have a small idea about the creative process that goes into this stuff.

I also know extremely basic C++.

I am willing to put in the time and effort, and all I need is a little nudge in the correct direction.

You should choose some engine, learn to work with it and then create a game with it.
I am learning to work with jMonkey Engine. It's an engine written in Java for Java programmers. It's open source.
Then I've heard about Unity engine, which, as they say, don't required you to know much about programming. It uses scripts, which are written in it's own scripting language. But there are payments for using it.
CryEngine looks good. It seems easy to make a landscape with it. I don't know about the programming site, though.

Yeah, I've heard unity is very easy to use. Games like receiver were made in just 7 days using the unity engine, so it may be good as a start. I'll check out jMonkey and CryEngine.

I suppose first I'll take a look at a few engines and see what fits into what I want to make. Then continue from there.

Thanks a bunch for your help, have a great day :)

Use RPGmaker, Steam standarts too low these days.

From what I've seen, isn't RPG maker mostly for top down games? My intent was to create something more in the 3d realm.

You're welcome.
There are many engines for different programming languages. I was surprised when I found engine written in Delphi :-D. So you can choose engine accordingly to which programming language you know best. I am best at Java, so that's why I chose jMonkey. An it has a good documentation, tutorials. They can be found at here:

Epic allows one to use their Unreal Developers Kit to make games and even sell them up to a certain amount before requiring the payment of royalty fees. There are plenty of tutorials for it too.

Thanks for the info. I've heard unreal engine is one of the best engines out there.

I'll look into it.

either unity or unreal
i know this thread is going to be locked due to being necro'd. But anyway, the obvious place to start is the game engines, but of course, it just depends on what engine you go with, as some will require some programming knowledge or very little, to quite a bit of programming knowledge. Then of course also what type of 3d game you looking at, ie 1st/3rd person type game, rpg, strategy, adventure, platformer.

But anyway, did you ever get into making your game or experimented?
