I to thought about these games but they really never went out of fashion and as such remained as popular as the day they were released. This made me discount them.
That's true, an update got a few people on twitch airing it in action which resulted in it being brought back into the public eye. This said though didn't happen just yesterday and can be traced backed to 2019.
Regardless of rhyme or reason for a non AAA game no one seemed interested in to shine the way it does now has me impressed and dare i say it hopeful other developers might return to their previous creations to make them shine the way they should or could.
Zombid did because of the long awaited multiplayer update (they really did do a blinder releaseing that at this time).
7 Days to Die continues to do this every time they pop out a major update too.
There's been loads that I can't recall offhand. And I'm glad it seems to be happening more.
Plus don't forget Doom and Quake have recently had new leves added from the original members - how many years is that?
It's the oldest game that has the biggest and still growing fanbase.
Dipped then came back 10X once pewdiepie and other streams started replaying it.
There really isn't a game that's older and more popular once it dwindled a bit.
This... Not sure if the OP intended remakes/remasters in this. But yeah a 20 year old game just as popular today as it was back in 2000
