Really hard to tell what world I'd go. SAO sounds good though. Perhaps with the possibility to switch, since living in 100 different floors would be kind of weird and not very big.
SAO is mostly the wet fantasy of the mangaka. To get all the without exception beautiful gamer girls. And to become the legend and special snowflake elite player all MMOs tell - lie about - for you to become. How ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ naive does one have to be to actually believe in this ♥♥♥♥, and make such a fantasy story about it. The creator either doesn't know the first thing about actual MMOs and online gaming in general, or knew that he would trigger the wet fantasies of the (male) gamer geeks with it.
I mean, GGO was another thing (didn't really like the theme), but I can't even disagree on what you're saying. Every girl straight up loves him and until now I'm still wondering why Asuna accepts all this.
Actual MMO's nowadays rarely have this kind of social interaction and SAO actually took advantage of that and it made me feel like they're actually doing something together. (players in general, not just Kirito and the crew)
Funny thing though because season 3 was actually pretty good in my opinion.
Even if, that doesn't mean it has to serve these anime tropes. I just hate it when you can tell that the head behind a show is male and probably masturbates to it himself. Why can't more shows treat things with more respect? Like Attack on Titan does. None of the girls/women in that get naked every episode and bend to the men like the sex slaves of tomorrow. It's a more serious story anyway, but from my experience even the more serious ones sometimes surrender to sexual tropes where there never was any need for it, like Mirai Nikki or even worse Testament of Sister New Devil or Brynhildr in the Darkness. Shows that actually have some interesting points and could explore the lore and characters deeply, unfold a greater story, but instead every second moment for some stupid reason or another all girls get naked and the male lead character for some stupid another reason gets to fondle their breasts or smack his head center mass into their genitals.
I liked the GGO arc in season 2 a lot. But afterwards it changed to some random fantasy nonsense again. If at least dieing would mean something again. Kirito mourning the loss of people in season 1 and the constant threat to his life or that of his companions, that was one of the most important aspects of it, all the drama and emotion depended on that. How could they just drop this entirely? But I've already heard people say that the mangaka is just bad at writing good stories. I can see what they mean by that. SAO every so often feels so aimless and random, like he never really knew where he wanted to go with it himself. Other than - at core - live the dream of becoming a badass MMO player and womanizer.
The problem I see in MMOs today is that many of them get overcasualized. It serves me, because I tend to play like a lonewolf anyway. But back in the day you couldn't just run past most other players and do most content all by yourself. You were forced to cooperate and interact with others. Not so much today. If people would die in RL from dieing in an MMO now they surely would be socializing a hell of a lot more too. And even if people have to interact with each other, they might not have too much patience. Many seem to expect you to look up stuff beforehand on YouTube. "Know your ♥♥♥♥" and stuff. Play by guides from day one forward. Everytime I see people asking in MMOs "What character should I play? What build?" or something like that something dies in me.
