What does the word "dating" mean to you?
I'm just curious because I use dating as a term that means you're just going on n dates with someone. Not that you're necessarily a couple or exclusive. However, a lot of people I talk to think of dating the same way I think of going steady which to me is when people are actually together as a couple exclusively.

Dating to me has a short term connotation where as going steady means long term goals.

Just curious to see what others on here think. Even my wife thinks it's weird that I differentiate the two terms because she thinks "going steady" is a dated term. I just feel like by definition dating means going on dates.

Dating is just going out to get to know someone you fancy.

A relationship is not dating.

Going out with a girl for her money and expecting her to pay for everything. Why?

It's a fuzzy term and can mean different things as you've illustrated. I'll usually ask for clarification. But I guess my first instinct is it referring to an unmarried couple.
Then that means Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn have been dating for the best part of 40 years.

That's why I always attribute it to long term and short term. Technically they'd be common law married I think.

?

I'm mocking the reversed sexism.

Guys believing they need to treat girls like princesses from another world and sit them on a pedestal, offering them everything they desire while out on a date. Then the girls just expecting that from them. Yeah, no thanks.

Bloody hell.

As for me it means, you're spending time and learning about another person. Exploring your feelings.

At least someone gets it! Ding ding ding

Going out with someone to be with just them for the time, and do what you like doing with them.

It doesn't mean sex, it doesn't mean exclusivity - but as long as they take the time just for me, it's a date. And no, it doesn't have to be romantic/relationship.

going out with a guy somewhere to see if they are interesting and fun enough to move from friendship to relationship status. Although it takes more than a couple of dates to get to figure the guy out before making the decision.

^This. When you're dating, you want to analyse the situation to determine the amount of ¹⁴C left in order to calculate when the relationship dies/ died.
What is this "relationship" you're speaking about? :P

It's the ship we'll all be sailing on when the planet's align and Harmonic Convergence is initiated.
When will that happen?

Exactly what it means. Why? Should it mean something else?

Dating is dating. You go out and have fun wearing something nice, being presentable, there doesn't have to be any pressure behind it other than having fun with someone you like to be with as long as they are of like mind.

Fine if something comes from it, but that is often the purpose of it. On the other hand if you are just playing the field? That works as well, so long as no one gets hurt along the way by making sure not to create an impression there could be something more to it, but that can be spelled out at the start of the date to avoid awkward encounters throughout the dates.

Dating is not often the most reliable means to find out if there is great chemistry between two persons though as the idea of what dating means is to be more with the intention of it turning into something, there are other ways to go about it than dating to avoid the issue of compatibility testing but it depend on the persons involved, take for example a casual relationship.

it allows people to "get it on" in a casual relationship without the pressure to turn it into something more and they can enjoy themselves as well and remove the intense desire to turn it into something that may not be the right direction at all between two people who clearly are crazy for each other in a physical aspect, but not on a level with clashing personalities for example which can be overlooked for however long it lasts.
