I graduated with a BS in psych, which is basically useless if you don't get a Masters (and even then, still somewhat useless). I worked at a facility for developmentally disabled adults and later a facility for mentally ill adults. Ethically rewarding work, but ethically rewarding work doesn't pay the bills.
Got out of that dead-end and now I drive trucks. Much happier driving trucks.
What does this mean?
You guessed it...
HA!!
So on top of finding out that college is pretty much pointless in America, and enough to bankrupt people for life (because college students with loans in America are treated worse than actual criminals when it comes to debt forgivness, for instance: you cannot actually declare bankruptcy on student loans), I then find out that many jobs are "scared" of people with degrees possibly wanting more money, so they are more likely to hire a highschool student instead.
College just isn't worth it if you have to take out loans to do it, or take classes in a woefully outdated and underfunded public school.
I then found out I can make more money running my own business or working as a warehoue manager or electrician or air-conditioning repairman (HVAC Technician), than I would as a entry level to mid-level geologist.
i laughed way to hard at this...
however i'm now depressed...
100% this lol If only I'd known. I would have never gone to college. It was some awesome memories and I grew as a person, but if I had gone into trucking sooner (like straight out of high school). I'd be making upwards to 72k per year by now. Might be even looking at getting my own truck, in which case I'd be making somewhere around 120k per year. Instead my dumbass worked with disabled people for around 20k per year. Just slightly above minimum wage and no chance to unionize or demand a raise.
What is sad is how often I hear things like that, and how eye-opening it is that college in America is pretty much a giant scam.
I got a friend with a B.A. and M.S. that couldn't get a job with anyone because of being "over qualified", and the jobs he was qualified for would normally pay around the $50K mark. He luckily didn't have student loans, but after nearly going homeless for lack of work, he saved up enough working construction jobs under the table to buy a turn-key "business in a van" for $45k doing roto-rooter plumbing work, and now makes over $100k a year. He laughs his butt off every time some college student calls him a "dumb plumber".
People really shouldn't do the college thing unless it is free, or they have an offer waiting for them in contractual writing before they even start.
