check the manual, many board will disable some sata ports when m.2 slots are populated with nvme or sata drives

No mention of any sata port diabling anywhere on the manual... The board is an ASUS AYW gaming b850 btw, but suddenly the sata Drive showed up in the BIOS

yep, they should not be disabled

in bios, make sure the sata ports are all set to jbod (just a bunch of discs), not raid or disabled

I wonder if the pc is trying to boot from one of the old disks? Have a look in bios to see what boot order is set.

There is no boot order execpt for the one from my original samsung SSD

SATA mode is in AHCI and not in raid mode, each port looks independent in the BIOS

The SATA HDD drive shows up in bios and displays 2TB of storage and shows up on disc management too. However whatever I do (switch ports reseat etc) it still shows I/O error. I think the most damning part is that it doesnt even show up with the command prompt SHOW DISK command. On device manager it just shows unknown device and on other disc apps it doesnt show at all.


The m.2 SSD never even had any signs of life. At first I thought it was a compatibility issue and that the SSD was an old m.2 SATA type but no it's actually an m.2 NVME based on the connector.

Unfortunately it's looking more likely that the 2 drives are basically dead as ♥♥♥♥, really unfortnate but they did sit there for at least a year. No idea what caused them to fail. Thanks for the replies

Boot to a windows install usb and go to the step where you delete partitions etc... and see if they show up there.

The drive work in the laptop?

Initilize the drive? Any data you want on the drives?

You could try a linux live usb to see if the drives show up there.

You ran list disk command?

The nvme from the laptop the os drive? Probably is. Might show up in linux. Might be able to delete all the partitions using a windows install usb. You will lose all the data if you delete the partitions. Might be able to get the data off using linux or the old laptop.

Load BIOS defaults. Test the drives independently. Change the cables and slots

Are you putting these into the pc? If so, consider making your life easier and getting a cheap dock/adapter to connect by usb to play around with them. Especially if they're so small in size that they aren't really worth occupying internal space/slots full time and just use them as externals in place of thumb drive use.

A little update, I got the HDD working..??

Linux was a bit too complicated for me so I went with Windows boot drive, tried looking for the SSD but it was nowhere to be found there

I updated the drivers again, it did nothing for the SSD but when I unplugged the m.2 SSD and tested the HDD it magically appeared in Disc Management all initlialized abd working. This was not the case at all for the past 24 hours and I'm really happy at least one works now.

I guess the updated chipset drivers worked? It's a bit weird because this PC is barely a month old and I already installed the chipset drivers not long ago. This sudden change of events really came unexpected and I was even in the middle of putting photos in an imgur album.

The SSD still doesn't work at all but at least one works. Should I format everything in the old drive just to prevent any compatibility issues?

Might be a good idea, I am so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tired of having to remove my gpu and gpu brackets every single time i want to fiddle with the horrible m.2 slot placement.

protip, to take screenshot, press print sc button (located above del/insert and pg up/dn keys)
then go to paint or whatever and paste, or use windows snipping tool

The problem with the old laptop drive is that it might have been the os drive. It probably still works you just might need to make it a regular blank disk some how? Same old laptop, windows install usb, linux live usb or some other way? If you do then maybe make the drive gpt. I wouldn't toss it.

Everone who fiddles with PCs should have an external USB caddy/dock that random SSDs (and HDDs) can be plugged into for testing or copying data to/from. They are not expensive.
